The Clink Charity has been at the forefront of offender rehabilitation since 2010 and has developed award winning training programs which have provided second chances to the most vulnerable in society whilst achieving superb results in rehabilitation and reduction in numbers of reoffending.
The Role:
Reporting to our Clink Gardens Manager/IQA, the role will be responsible for the running of our Clink Kitchen Garden at HMP Erlestoke and for the training and assessing of our Learners City & Guilds qualifications in horticulture. This is a new kitchen garden within our portfolio of Clink Gardens, and is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Head Gardener who has previous experience running commercial kitchen gardens.
Contract: Permanent, Full Time.
Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm
Location: HMP Erlestoke, Erlestoke House, Erlestoke, Devizes SN10 5TU
Salary: Up to £30,000 per annum
Key Responsibilities Include:
Training our Prison Learners:
- Ensuring we recruit up to 10 Prison Learners at a time
- Ensuring that The Clink’s Five Step Training Programme is implemented, and that all our Learners are following the programme
- Delivering high quality training to the Prison Learners in line with City & Guild NVQ qualification
standards for Level 2 & 3 Work Based Horticulture.
- Ensuring that all the Learners work is up to date and logged in line with City & Guild NVQ expectations
- Lead delivery of Plot to Plate Programme (a one-t- one/two-to-one intensive support programme for non-engagers) in conjunction with Clink Support worker.
- Leading by example in delivering training with innovation, creativity and flair, and ensure that our Learners are taught and inspired by new horticulture techniques and industry trends
- Delivering training & coaching with passion and sharing a love for plants and knowledge of commercial crop production
Running the Clink Gardens:
- Ensuring that the entire garden operation is run on a commercial basis, in order for the Learners to gain valuable experience whilst gaining academic qualifications
- Acting as a Clink Brand Ambassador, leading by example and challenging our Learners to maintain a professional work ethic
- Responsibility for the planning, development and success of the garden in collaboration with the Clink Gardens Manager/IQA at HMP Send
- Managing the garden operation to optimise and sustain our production of crops; whilst ensuring efficient use of resources and a continuous supply of crops
- Building and maintaining effective relationships across all internal departments within the charity, HM Prison Service Gardener and the local community
- Managing allocated budgets to ensure cost effective goals are being met and surpassed, and that all associated administration has been completed correctly
- Organising guest industry visits by suppliers and key horticulturalists
Technical Competency:
- It is essential to have a TAQA (assessing qualification) or equivalent and have experience of delivering training in the workplace
- Training Techniques and/or Craft Trainer Award V1 Assessor would be desirable, and;
- A diploma or degree in Horticulture accredited by either Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) or NVQ Level 3 is desirable but not essential
Skills & Experience Required:
- Previous experience as a Head Gardener, running a commercial kitchen garden
- Strong working knowledge and experience of growing a wide range of fresh seasonal produce
- Strong personality with confidence to manage the planning and execution of strategy
- Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of commercial horticulture
- A good understanding of managing, budgets and driving crop production for use in restaurants
- Previous experience of delivering training and successfully managing and developing a team is essential
- Strong leadership skills managing a number of reports and accountabilities is essential
- Able to work as part of a team and work on own initiative
- Proven experience running a kitchen garden and ability to grow a wide range of produce
