Job Summary:
Elmwood Golf Course, located in the scenic region of Fife, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head Greenkeeper to oversee the maintenance and management of the course’s grounds. As the Head Greenkeeper, you will be responsible for ensuring that the golf course is maintained to the highest standards, delivering an exceptional playing experience for all members and guests. You will lead a team of greenkeeping staff, manage the course’s maintenance schedule, and work closely with the General Manager to enhance the facility's overall appeal and environmental sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Course Maintenance: Oversee the daily maintenance of the golf course, including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and surrounding areas, ensuring they meet the club’s high standards for playability and aesthetics.
- Team Leadership: Lead, train, and manage the greenkeeping team, providing guidance on best practices, safety procedures, and professional development. Ensure the team operates efficiently and cohesively.
- Planning & Scheduling: Develop and implement maintenance schedules, including turf care, aeration, irrigation, pest control, and fertilization. Ensure work is completed in a timely manner, with minimal disruption to golfers.
- Equipment Management: Manage the use and maintenance of all greenkeeping equipment and machinery, ensuring it is kept in good working order and serviced regularly.
- Course Improvement: Work with the General Manager to identify opportunities for course improvements, including landscaping, new planting, and sustainability initiatives.
- Environmental Sustainability: Ensure the golf course operates in an environmentally responsible manner, promoting biodiversity, water conservation, and the use of eco-friendly products and practices.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Maintain compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for the team and a safe, enjoyable experience for golfers.
- Budget & Inventory Management: Assist in managing the greenkeeping budget, including ordering supplies, controlling costs, and managing inventory.
- Weather Monitoring: Monitor weather conditions and adjust maintenance practices accordingly, ensuring course conditions remain optimal for play year-round.
- Communication: Regularly communicate with the General Manager, staff, and members regarding course conditions, upcoming maintenance, and any temporary course closures or disruptions.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Previous experience as a Greenkeeper, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role or a similar supervisory position.
- Extensive knowledge of turf management, horticulture, and agronomy specific to golf course maintenance.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing a team in an outdoor environment.
- Proficient in the operation and maintenance of greenkeeping machinery and equipment.
- A relevant greenkeeping qualification (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Sports Turf, or equivalent).
- Sound understanding of environmental sustainability practices within golf course management.
- Essential: Spraying certificates (e.g., PA1/PA6) for pesticide and chemical application.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
- A passion for golf course maintenance and the natural environment.
Desirable:
- Experience with irrigation systems, pest and disease management, and the use of organic or sustainable products.
- Desirable: Chainsaw certification/tickets for tree management and maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and experience in maintaining compliance.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position, including weekends and early mornings depending on course maintenance needs.
