Fantastic opportunity for an experienced gardener with a qualification in horticulture (RHS/ NVQ level 2/3), to join a small, friendly team, maintaining and developing the beautiful 12 acre gardens of our renowned five star country house hotel. As one of our gardeners, you will be joining a hospitality team delivering a 5 star service to our guests - this applies equally in and around the house and gardens, so a friendly, flexible and adaptable guest facing disposition is essential for this role too.
Whatley Manor is an independent, luxury 5* hotel that operates like a house and feels like a home. Less than 30 minutes from Chippenham, Stroud, Nailsworth, Tetbury and Cirencester, we are commutable from many locations in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Yate, Bristol or Bath. We are quite different. Our beautifully restored, 23-bedroom, 18th century manor house hotel offers a grown-up getaway in the heart of the Cotswolds. Set in 12 acres of expertly designed, historic garden inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1920s, our garden features extensive mixed borders, a woodland garden, arboretum, and a no-dig kitchen garden. The produce from the kitchen garden and orchard supplies our Michelin starred restaurant ‘The Dining Room’ and Grey’s, Whatley’s answer to casual dining. We also have conference facilities, Aquarias, a luxury spa and gym and our very own 40 seat cinema!
We are AA 5 red star Inspectors Choice Hotel and are proud members of the Pride of Britain collection.
The Role:
As part of a small and friendly, yet knowledgeable, passionate, and conscientious garden team, you will be expected to complete a wide range of garden tasks to a very high standard; from mowing and propagation to organic pest and disease control and giving tours to visitors, there really are no two days the same at Whatley Manor.
We are looking for a professional gardener, not only with a passion for plants, gardens, nature and the outdoors but also a public facing personality, familiar with the requirements of working in a prestigious public garden. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, good attention for detail, a rounded knowledge of plants, and experience competently operating a wide range of garden machinery. Experience and knowledge of organic production horticulture would also be desirable.
Most importantly, we are looking for a candidate who is eager to learn, develop, someone who will bring new and exciting ideas, specialist interests and horticultural best practice to the team.
Accolades:
Since opening in 2003 we have won many awards for the spa and fine dining. We have retained our 5 bubble rating in the Good Spa Guide. We are passionate leaders of sustainable hospitality, with notable achievements including a GREEN Michelin star for The Dining Room and the Catey Sustainable Business Award. We are silver certificated through EarthCheck.
