LANDSCAPE TECHNICIAN
Summary Of Position
Performs activities associated with the landscaping and maintenance of park areas and other City owned properties.
Examples Of Work
Essential Duties*
- Performs routine grounds maintenance and landscaping functions including mowing, edging and trimming of grounds and parks, planting, watering, weeding, and maintaining trees, shrubs and bedding plants;
- Applies a wide range of chemicals and fertilizers to treat and control insects, plant diseases, and nutrient deficiencies;
- Operates hand pump sprayers, injectors, tillers, broadcast and drop spreaders, etc.
- Checks oil, water, fuel, tires and hydraulic systems and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle/equipment is in proper working condition;
- Keeps informed of laws, policies, and regulations concerning the application of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides;
- Maintains records, inventories and maintenance schedules;
- Provides assistance with and suggestions for increased safety during assigned projects;
- May provide other park maintenance, construction, and repair activities;
- Operates riding mowers, push mowers, trimmers, power tools, and hand tools;
- Loads, transports, and unloads necessary materials for assigned projects;
- Observes safety rules and procedures; and
Other Important Duties*
- Works nights and weekends in support of all City related special events including working City holidays such as July 4.
- Performs such other duties as may be required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of: turf management and the use and application of chemicals and compounds including fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides; techniques and practices for propagating, planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, bedding plants and ground cover.
Physical ability to: work in hot, cold, and/or wet weather conditions; lift and maneuver up to 100 lbs.; perform rigorous activity as required in performing manual labor.
Ability to: operate standard maintenance equipment, service and make minor repairs on equipment and to know safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow written and oral instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other employees
Acceptable Experience And Training
High school diploma, or its equivalent, and three years of experience in a field related to landscaping, caring for plants, gardens, park lands, or other similar responsibilities;
or sufficient education to read and write, plus at least two years of experience operating light equipment;
or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates And Licenses Required
State of Texas Class C driver’s license. Must obtain a Texas Noncommercial Pesticide Applicators license within six months of employment.
- Starting Pay: $18.55/hour
