Job Title: Head Vegetable Grower

Job Overview: We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic vegetable grower to head up our organic vegetable growing operation at Balgove Larder. You will be tasked with producing high-quality, sustainably grown vegetables, salads and herbs, in our purpose built market garden, while maintaining our commitment to organic farming practices. All produce is channeled through our Steak Barn, Cafe and Deli Kitchens and packaged for retailing through our award winning the Balgove Larder Farm Shop.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, propagate, plant, cultivate, and harvest a variety of organic vegetables, salads and herbs in our 5 poly tunnels.
- Implement sustainable farming practices, including crop rotation, composting and mulching.
- Monitor plant health, growth progress, and environmental factors, adjusting care routines as necessary.
- Perform routine soil testing and maintain optimal soil health through sustainable methods.
- Maintain accurate records of crop yields, planting schedules, and soil treatments.
- Operate farm equipment, including irrigation systems, ensuring proper maintenance and safety.
- Harvest and package produce for sale, ensuring proper storage and handling to maintain product quality.
- Co-ordinate orders with the Farm Shop team, Chefs and Butchers.
- Managing farm inventory, including seeds, tools, and materials.
- Manage a small seasonal team to ensure timely planting and harvesting cycles.
- Comply with all organic certification standards and food safety guidelines.
- Troubleshoot and resolve challenges such as pests, diseases, or adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in organic farming, horticulture, or vegetable production (min. 1-3 years preferred).
- Knowledge of organic farming methods and certifications
- Ability to operate and maintain farm equipment.
- Strong understanding of soil health, irrigation systems, and pest management.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to keep accurate records.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Willingness to follow safety protocols and sustainability practices.
- Valid driver's license (preferred but not required).
