TITLE: GROUNDS WORKER
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Knowledge of gardening and grounds maintenance practices.
- Ability to organize and delegate assignments.
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Perform heavy lifting and physical labor.
- Skill to operate motorized vehicles, hand and power tools and related equipment.
- No formal education is required. One year of experience in grounds maintenance or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Regular attendance is required.
REPORTS TO: Grounds Supervisor
SUPERVISES: Student or seasonal employees
Performance Responsibilities
- Serves as a lead worker by directing and inspecting the work of grounds keepers and participating in planned grounds maintenance activities such as mowing, watering, spraying, trimming, planting, cultivating, snow removal and clean-up operations.
- Responsible for the general care and maintenance of lawns, athletic fields, trees, flowers, shrubs and sidewalks and related equipment.
- Participates in planning, assigning and monitoring grounds maintenance.
- Trains new personnel in grounds maintenance.
- Supervises and participates in mowing, irrigating, fertilizing, aerating and weeding grounds, cutting and laying sod and landscaping.
- Supervises a grounds crew and participates in planting, cultivating, irrigating, trimming and spraying plant life.
- Removes ice, snow and debris from sidewalks, streets and grounds using hand tools and related vehicles and equipment.
- Loads, unloads and moves furniture, equipment, materials and supplies by operation automotive vehicles, tractors and forklifts.
- Maintains, installs and repairs sprinklers systems by digging holes, trenches and drainage ditches.
- Operates, maintains and repairs lawn mowers, power sweepers, tractors, various power and hand tools, and related equipment.
- Patches and grades parking lots, streets and sidewalks.
- Liens and maintains athletic fields, sets up equipment for special events, and cleans stadium and rest area restrooms.
- Maintains a detailed inventory of fungicides, pesticides and other hazardous wastes for eventual safe disposal.
- Inventories and orders supplies, pesticides, fertilizers, spray equipment and plant labels.
- Performs other work as required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) Month. Salary, work and benefits to be established by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job is to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of support services personnel.
